Richard S. Heisler | Penn educator, 88 Posted on May 2nd
Richard Shelley Heisler, 88, of New Britain, who taught education courses at the University of Pennsylvania for 25 years, died of cancer April 24 at Pine Run Hospice in Doylestown.
Dr. Heisler grew up in North Philadelphia, where his father was a physician. He earned a bachelor’s degree, master’s degree, and doctorate in education from the University of Pennsylvania. He taught science for 10 years at Souderton High School before joining the faculty of the Graduate School of Education at the University of Pennsylvania. He retired in the late 1980s.
In addition to teaching, Dr. Heisler evaluated the curriculum for many school districts in Pennsylvania. He was coauthor of several books, including Appraising and Improving the Performance of School Administrative Personnel.
He enjoyed researching the history of trolley cars and had visited trolley lines in many U.S. cities. He was a member of the Theater Organ Society of Delaware Valley and helped restore pipe organs in local movie theaters.
Dr. Heisler is survived by cousins.
A Funeral Mass will be said at 10 a.m. tomorrow at St. Jude Church, 321 W. Butler Ave., Chalfont. Friends may call at 9 a.m. Burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery, Yeadon.
