Rachel Sweitzer, 1915-2009: Army nurse, honored for work during WW II Posted on March 22nd
Rachel Sweitzer landed on Utah Beach in Normandy in June 1944, just a couple weeks after the Allied invasion.
The battle had moved on but the wounded remained and Mrs. Sweitzer, a diminutive Army nurse with several years’ experience at Hines VA Hospital, was at work in a makeshift hospital within hours of her arrival in France.
“Small, big, everything,” she told the Tribune in 2005. “We just took care of the situation.”
Mrs. Sweitzer, 93, died of natural causes on Saturday, March 14, in NorthShore University Health System Skokie Hospital, said her son Rick. Until being laid up by a broken hip last fall, she had lived in the same Wilmette home since 1951.
